How can i get J1 visa for a job in the USA without having to go on one of those Work and travel programs?

I have gone on the program before but it is quite expensive, and I would like to do internship but using a regular visa, as i already received a social security # thru the work and travel program, do i need a J1 visa to accompany the said SSN?

in order to get a J1 you have to go through a program. it sounds like you are looking for a different kind of visa. try looking into an f-1 (you'll have to enroll in school but after you graduate you can do an internship using "optional practical training" time for about 1 year). you may also be interested in an h-1b depending on the type of job you're looking for (also with this one you wouldn't be able to start until next year on october 1st). whichever you think may be best, you should definitely get in touch with an immigration attorney because this is a very complex inquiry.

it is not relevant that you already have a ssn. for more information check out: www.uscis.gov

  1. You can get a J1 for Work Travel or Camp Counselor. Critical to shop around though as pricing can vary a lot. Try http://www.myJ1visa.com for some ideas.
