No, you need to apply for a working visa at the Australian consulate/embassy. If you are caught working without a visa they will deport you.

it only took me an hour, at the consulate, dont know if being a british citz was the reason http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20060722073842AA9osjH&kid=QsUmXDW.A2VdW8TrpJ.4r5BgvCL6TZbFp4YyeuBJkCJ6Dv6iD.un&s=comm&date=2006-07-23+07%3A03%3A37&.crumb=

Usually you need to be "sponsored" by someone who you're going to be working for; otherwise, if you go over there with no job, how do they keep track of you; I think since 9/11 things have become more strict in regards to work visas http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20060722073842AA9osjH&kid=NbUvWDK.UzarktSAwg35&s=comm&date=2006-07-24+16%3A08%3A26&.crumb=

Contact the Australian consulate for that info.
