Can I travel to Europe (I'm Aussie) without a visa or work permit?

I want to go to Europe, I don't care which country i start in. I am then going to backpack around Europe and visit different countries, I am also planning to get short term work as I travel around.

I am an 18m Australian, been trying to find this out for ages and can't get a straight answer.

If anyone is also interested in doing this and wants a buddy or has done it before or has knoweldge of it please send me an email so we can chat about it.
